Extraordinary olla by Eli Navarrete Ortiz, featuring beautiful cut-out Macaws!
In 1997, in "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" the authors stated
that Eli Navarrete: "...could become one of the two or three best potters to ever come out of Mata Ortiz" In 2010 we say he already is
one of the best!This pot is amazingly lightweight with symmetrical thin walls. Eli sanded the inside of the pot so the cut out
shilluets would contrat beautifuly with the light smooth interior.
The cut out Macaws, one of the most important deities in Paquimean culture, are incredibly integrated to the painted design.
This olla is a testament to Eli's incredible talent and creativity!
